Joshua has just finished the southern campaign, a rapid series of victories over the five Amorite kings and the cities of Makkedah, Libnah, Lachish, Eglon, Hebron and Debir. The narrator closes the chapter by bringing Joshua and all Israel back to Gilgal, the base camp near Jericho where the conquest began.
