Joshua 12 closes the conquest stories with a tally of defeated kings, and verses 9 through 24 list the kings west of the Jordan, each followed by the word "one." Jarmuth and Lachish were Canaanite city-states in the Shephelah, the low foothills between the coastal plain and the hill country. Lachish appears earlier in the narrative, where its king joined a coalition against Gibeon and was defeated.
