Joshua 22:16 meaning and explanation

“This is what the whole congregation of the LORD says: ‘What is this breach of faith you have committed today against the God of Israel by turning away from the LORD and building for yourselves an altar, that you might rebel against the LORD this day?

Joshua 22:16, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Phinehas, the priest, and ten tribal leaders speak these words to the Reubenites, Gadites and half-tribe of Manasseh, who had built a large altar near the Jordan after returning to their land east of the river. The western tribes treat the altar as a breach of faith, the Hebrew maal, meaning treachery or unfaithfulness, because the law allowed one central altar for sacrifice.
