Joshua 22:30 meaning and explanation

When Phinehas the priest and the chiefs of the congregation—the heads of Israel’s clans who were with him—heard what the descendants of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh had to say, they were satisfied.

Joshua 22:30, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Phinehas the priest and the ten clan chiefs had come from Shiloh expecting the eastern tribes to have committed apostasy by building a second altar. In verses 21 to 29 the Reubenites, Gadites and half-tribe of Manasseh explain that the altar is not for sacrifice but a witness, a replica meant to remind future generations that they too share in the LORD.
