Joshua 22:34 meaning and explanation

So the Reubenites and Gadites named the altar Witness, for they said, “It is a witness between us that the LORD is God.”

Joshua 22:34, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The eastern tribes had built an altar by the Jordan, and the western tribes read it as rebellion and gathered for war. Phinehas and the chiefs came to investigate, and the eastern tribes explained the altar was never for sacrifice but a memorial, so that future generations would not be told they had no share in the LORD.
