Joshua 24:11 meaning and explanation

After this, you crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho. The people of Jericho fought against you, as did the Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites, and Jebusites, and I delivered them into your hand.

Joshua 24:11, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Joshua is speaking at Shechem, but his words are framed as a direct oracle from the LORD: "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says." Recounting Israel's story from Abraham to the conquest, God reminds the people that the land was received, not seized by their own strength. The list of peoples names the inhabitants of Canaan whom Israel faced after crossing the Jordan.
