Joshua 4:7 meaning and explanation

you are to tell them, ‘The waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters were cut off.’ Therefore these stones will be a memorial to the Israelites forever.”

Joshua 4:7, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Joshua is instructing the twelve men chosen from each tribe, after Israel has crossed the Jordan on dry ground while the priests still stand with the ark in the riverbed. The stones taken from the middle of the Jordan are to be a sign and a teaching tool: when children ask what they mean, parents are to recount that the waters were cut off before the ark of the covenant.
