Joshua 5:14 meaning and explanation

“Neither,” He replied. “I have now come as Commander of the LORD’s army.” Then Joshua fell facedown in reverence and asked Him, “What does my Lord have to say to His servant?”

Joshua 5:14, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Joshua is camped near Jericho, about to begin the conquest, and meets a man with a drawn sword. Joshua asks whose side he is on, and the reply refuses the choice: "Neither." The figure is not a soldier to be recruited but the Commander of the LORD's army, so Joshua is the one who must take orders.
