Then the men of Judah went with their brothers the Simeonites, attacked the Canaanites living in Zephath, and devoted the city to destruction. So it was called Hormah.

Judah and Simeon had agreed to fight together, and their combined force attacked the Canaanite city of Zephath. The narrator notes that they “devoted the city to destruction,” the Hebrew word herem, which means something set apart for God, in this case by total destruction.
