Judges 1:6 meaning and explanation

As Adoni-bezek fled, they pursued him, seized him, and cut off his thumbs and big toes.

Judges 1:6, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Judah and Simeon have attacked the Canaanite coalition at Bezek, and its king, Adoni-bezek, flees alone. His name means "lord of Bezek." The mutilation of thumbs and big toes was a known ancient practice that disabled a captured king for war and marked him as permanently humbled; verse 7 shows he understood it as retribution for the seventy kings he had treated the same way.
