Jephthah is speaking through messengers to the king of the Ammonites, who claimed Israel had seized his land on the way from Egypt. Jephthah answers with history: Israel asked only for passage through the territory of Sihon king of the Amorites, Sihon attacked instead, and the LORD gave Israel the victory.
