Jephthah, newly made leader of Gilead, is negotiating with the king of the Ammonites, who claims Israel stole land during the exodus. Jephthah answers with a legal argument: Israel took this territory from Sihon the Amorite, not from Ammon or Moab, and has held it for three hundred years.
