Micah, an Ephraimite, has set up a private shrine with silver idols and an ephod, and he now installs a wandering Levite as his household priest. The Hebrew verb millēʾ yad, literally to fill the hand, is the standard idiom for ordination, but here a private man performs it, which the law reserved for the proper sanctuary.
