The five spies had been sent from Zorah and Eshtaol to find territory, since the tribe of Dan had not yet received its inheritance (verses 1 and 2). When they return, their clansmen ask what they found, and the spies report on Laish, a tranquil and unsuspecting people in a spacious land (verses 7 and 9).
