The old man is an Ephraimite living among the Benjamites of Gibeah, and the traveler is the Levite whose concubine has fled and been brought home. The question sounds ordinary, but in this chapter it exposes a crisis of hospitality: no one in an Israelite town has taken the travelers in, so they sit in the square after dark.
