Judges 21:18 meaning and explanation

But we cannot give them our daughters as wives.” For the Israelites had sworn, “Cursed is he who gives a wife to a Benjamite.”

Judges 21:18, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The elders of Israel are speaking near the end of the book, after the tribe of Benjamin has been nearly destroyed in a civil war. They had earlier sworn at Mizpah not to give their daughters to Benjamites, and now that oath traps them: they want Benjamin to survive, yet they believe they cannot break their vow.
