Judges 4:18 meaning and explanation

Jael went out to greet Sisera and said to him, “Come in, my lord. Come in with me. Do not be afraid.” So he entered her tent, and she covered him with a blanket.

Judges 4:18, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jael is the wife of Heber the Kenite, a clan at peace with Jabin, so Sisera flees to her tent expecting shelter and safety. Her words, "Come in, my lord," are the welcome a host owed a guest, and her promise "Do not be afraid" is deeply ironic, since the danger is already inside with him.
