Judges 7:7 meaning and explanation

Then the LORD said to Gideon, “With the three hundred men who lapped the water I will save you and deliver the Midianites into your hand. But all the others are to go home.”

Judges 7:7, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The LORD has just cut Gideon's army from thirty-two thousand to ten thousand, and now to three hundred, chosen only by how they drank at the spring of Harod. Verse 2 gives the reason: Israel must not boast, "My own hand has saved me." The Hebrew verb yasha, to save, is the same word used for deliverance throughout Judges, and here the LORD claims the victory as his own.
