Explanation preview
Gideon has just refused kingship, insisting that the LORD alone should rule Israel (verse 23). Yet he then asks his troops for gold earrings from the Midianite plunder and uses the metal to make an ephod, a priestly garment or object, which he sets up in his own town of Ophrah.
