Jotham, the lone surviving son of Gideon (Jerubbaal), speaks from Mount Gerizim to the leaders of Shechem who have crowned his half-brother Abimelech after killing seventy brothers. His parable of the trees ends with a conditional blessing: if they acted faithfully and honestly toward Gideon's house, then mutual rejoicing between king and people would follow.
