Judges 9:27 meaning and explanation

And after they had gone out into the fields, gathered grapes from their vineyards, and trodden them, they held a festival and went into the house of their god; and as they ate and drank, they cursed Abimelech.

Judges 9:27, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The verse comes from the story of Abimelech, who murdered his seventy brothers and was made king by the leaders of Shechem. Here those leaders celebrate the grape harvest, an ordinary joyful occasion, and go into the house of their god, likely the temple of Baal-berith mentioned earlier in the chapter.
