Judges 9:4 meaning and explanation

So they gave him seventy shekels of silver from the temple of Baal-berith, with which Abimelech hired some worthless and reckless men to follow him.

Judges 9:4, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The verse follows Abimelech, son of Gideon (called Jerubbaal), who persuades his mother's clan in Shechem to back him as sole ruler rather than share power with his seventy brothers. The silver comes from the temple of Baal-berith, "Baal of the covenant," the city's patron deity, so the money that funds his coup is drawn from a pagan shrine.
