Lamentations 4:9 meaning and explanation

Those slain by the sword are better off than those who die of hunger, who waste away, pierced with pain because the fields lack produce.

Lamentations 4:9, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The poet, an eyewitness of Jerusalem's fall in 586 BC, continues his lament over the siege. Famine was one of the covenant curses for disobedience (Deuteronomy 28:48), and here it proves crueler than the sword.
