Leviticus 1:9 meaning and explanation

The entrails and legs must be washed with water, and the priest shall burn all of it on the altar as a burnt offering, an offering made by fire, a pleasing aroma to the LORD.

Leviticus 1:9, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The LORD is instructing Moses at the Tent of Meeting, and this verse closes the first case in Leviticus: the burnt offering, called olah in Hebrew, meaning that which goes up. The worshipper has laid a hand on the animal, slaughtered it, and skinned and cut it; now the priest washes the inner parts and legs and burns the whole animal, not a portion.
