Leviticus 17:14 meaning and explanation

For the life of all flesh is its blood. Therefore I have told the Israelites, ‘You must not eat the blood of any living thing, because the life of all flesh is its blood; whoever eats it must be cut off.’

Leviticus 17:14, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

God is speaking to Moses for all Israel, native and foreigner alike, gathered around the tabernacle in the wilderness. Verse 14 restates the reason behind the ban on eating blood: blood carries the life of a creature, and life belongs to God, who gave blood on the altar to make atonement (verse 11).
