Leviticus 19:34 meaning and explanation

You must treat the foreigner living among you as native-born and love him as yourself, for you were foreigners in the land of Egypt. I am the LORD your God.

Leviticus 19:34, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The LORD is speaking to Moses for the whole congregation of Israel, camped at Sinai as they prepare to enter the land. Israel's own story as foreigners in Egypt becomes the reason for compassion: the Hebrew word ger means a resident foreigner, someone settled among them without land or kin.
