Leviticus 25:42 meaning and explanation

Because the Israelites are My servants, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt, they are not to be sold as slaves.

Leviticus 25:42, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

God speaks to Moses on Mount Sinai, and Moses gives these laws to the Israelites before they enter the land. The verse supplies the reason for the command just before it: an impoverished Israelite who sells himself to a fellow Israelite must be treated as a hired worker, not forced into slave labor, and released in the Jubilee with his children.
