Leviticus 27:31 meaning and explanation

If a man wishes to redeem part of his tithe, he must add a fifth to its value.

Leviticus 27:31, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Israel's tithe, a tenth of the land's produce, belonged to the LORD and was holy, so it could not simply be kept back and used for ordinary purposes. This verse, spoken by God to Moses on Sinai, allowed a man to buy back part of his tithe by paying its value plus a fifth, a twenty percent penalty.
