Luke 20:31 meaning and explanation

and the third married the widow, and in the same way all seven died, leaving no children.

Luke 20:31, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

These words come from the Sadducees, a group who denied the resurrection, as they set a deliberately extreme case before Jesus in the temple courts. They build on the law in Deuteronomy 25 that a man should marry his brother's widow to raise up offspring, and here they carry the story through all seven brothers, each dying childless.
