Malachi 2:10 meaning and explanation

Do we not all have one Father? Did not one God create us? Why then do we break faith with one another so as to profane the covenant of our fathers?

Malachi 2:10, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Malachi is speaking to a community back from exile, and in this verse he turns from the priests to address all of Judah. The "one Father" most likely points to God as creator of all, and the "covenant of our fathers" recalls the covenant at Sinai that bound Israel to God and to one another.
