Malachi 2:4 meaning and explanation

Then you will know that I have sent you this commandment so that My covenant with Levi may continue,” says the LORD of Hosts.

Malachi 2:4, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

God speaks through Malachi to the priests of postexilic Judah, who had failed in their teaching and led many astray. Verse 4 follows a severe warning of curse and humiliation, and it names the purpose behind that severity: the rebuke is not rejection but correction, sent so that the covenant with Levi, the priestly tribe, might continue.
