Mark 12:14 meaning and explanation

“Teacher,” they said, “we know that You are honest and seek favor from no one. Indeed, You are impartial and teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay them or not?”

Mark 12:14, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

These words come from Pharisees and Herodians sent to trap Jesus in the temple courts during his final week in Jerusalem. Their flattering opening is a setup: Judea was under Roman rule, and the tax to Caesar was resented, so a yes could discredit Jesus with the crowd and a no could bring a charge of rebellion.
