Mark 12:34 meaning and explanation

When Jesus saw that the man had answered wisely, He said, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And no one dared to question Him any further.

Mark 12:34, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

A scribe, impressed by Jesus' answer about the greatest commandments, agrees that loving God and neighbor outweighs burnt offerings. Jesus sees his insight and tells him he is "not far from the kingdom of God." The Greek word for kingdom, basileia, means reign or rule, so nearness here is about entering God's rule, not geography.
