Jesus is leaving the temple in Jerusalem shortly before his death, and one of his disciples points out the impressive stonework and buildings of the temple complex. The disciple's words are admiring, perhaps proud, and they set up Jesus' startling reply in the next verse that not one stone will be left on another.
