Mark 14:5 meaning and explanation

It could have been sold for over three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor.” And they scolded her.

Mark 14:5, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

These words come from some of those reclining at table in Simon the Leper's house in Bethany, where a woman has just poured a jar of pure nard over Jesus' head. A denarius was roughly a day's wage, so three hundred denarii meant about a year's pay, and the objectors frame their complaint as concern for the poor.
