Mark 15:10 meaning and explanation

For he knew it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over.

Mark 15:10, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Pilate, the Roman governor, has just asked the crowd whether they want him to release "the King of the Jews." Mark tells us Pilate's insight: he recognized that the chief priests had handed Jesus over out of envy, not because of any real threat to Roman order. The Greek word is phthonos, meaning envy or jealousy.
