At the ninth hour, near three in the afternoon, Jesus cries out from the cross in Aramaic, and Mark translates it for his readers. The words open Psalm 22, a lament of a righteous sufferer surrounded by mockers, so Jesus prays the psalm in his agony rather than merely describing abandonment.
