For Herod himself had ordered that John be arrested and bound and imprisoned, on account of his brother Philip’s wife Herodias, whom Herod had married.

Mark's Gospel pauses to explain why Herod Antipas, ruler of Galilee, had John the Baptist arrested. Herod had married Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, and John had publicly told him this was unlawful, since Jewish law forbade marrying a brother's wife while the brother was living (Leviticus 18:16).
