After Jesus had left the crowd and gone into the house, His disciples inquired about the parable.

Jesus had just told the crowd that nothing entering a person from outside defiles him, but what comes out does (7:15). That saying puzzled even His closest followers, so Mark notes they asked Him about it privately, in a house, away from the crowd.
