After shrieking and convulsing him violently, the spirit came out. The boy became like a corpse, so that many said, “He is dead.”

Mark 9:26, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jesus has just come down the mountain to find a crowd and an argument, and a father has brought his son, tormented since childhood by a spirit that throws him into fire and water. When Jesus commands the unclean spirit to leave, it obeys only after one last violent convulsion, leaving the boy lying motionless, so that onlookers conclude he is dead.
