This verse sits in the third panel of Matthew's genealogy, the generations after the return from Babylon. Matthew is writing for a largely Jewish audience, and he arranges the line of Jesus into three sets of fourteen generations (verse 17) to show that Jesus stands in direct continuity with Abraham and David.
