Matthew 1:21 meaning and explanation
She will give birth to a Son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.”
Matthew 1:21, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
An angel of the Lord speaks these words to Joseph in a dream, after Joseph has resolved to divorce Mary quietly because she is pregnant before they came together. The angel addresses him as "son of David," tying the child to Israel's royal line, and commands him to name the boy Jesus, the Greek form of Yeshua or Joshua, which means "the LORD saves." The name itself states the mission: this child will save his people from their sins, a rescue deeper than rescue from Rome.
