Matthew opens his Gospel with a genealogy, and verse 5 is one of its most striking lines. The list traces Jesus' legal descent from Abraham through David, and here it names two mothers: Rahab, the Canaanite woman of Jericho who sheltered Israel's spies in Joshua 2, and Ruth, the Moabite widow whose story fills the book of Ruth.
