Matthew 18:9 meaning and explanation

And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.

Matthew 18:9, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jesus is speaking to his disciples, and this verse continues the warning he began in verse 8. The language is deliberately shocking: he says to tear out the eye that causes stumbling, because entering life maimed is better than keeping both eyes and being thrown into Gehenna, the valley outside Jerusalem used as a picture of final judgment.
