The disciples respond to Jesus' teaching that divorce is permitted only for sexual immorality and that remarriage after divorce commits adultery. Their reaction is practical rather than theoretical: if a man is bound so tightly to a wife he cannot easily release, they conclude it is safer not to marry at all.
