Matthew 20:2 meaning and explanation

He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his vineyard.

Matthew 20:2, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jesus is telling a parable about the kingdom of heaven, and here the landowner settles terms with the first workers he hires. A denarius was the standard day's wage for a laborer, so the agreement is fair and ordinary: a full day's work for a full day's pay.
