Matthew 20:8 meaning and explanation

When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages, starting with the last ones hired and moving on to the first.’

Matthew 20:8, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jesus is telling the parable of the laborers in the vineyard to his disciples, and this verse marks the moment of reckoning. Under the Mosaic law, a hired worker had to be paid before sunset (Deuteronomy 24:15), so the owner's command to settle accounts at evening is both lawful and expected.
