Matthew 23:18 meaning and explanation

And you say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gift on it, he is bound by his oath.’

Matthew 23:18, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jesus is speaking to the crowds and His disciples about the scribes and Pharisees, who taught that an oath sworn by the altar carried no obligation, while one sworn by the gift on the altar was binding. In context this is the second of several “woes” exposing a casuistry that ranked the gift above the altar that made it sacred.
