Matthew 25:40 meaning and explanation

And the King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me.’

Matthew 25:40, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jesus is speaking to His disciples on the Mount of Olives, describing the final judgment when the Son of Man sits on His throne and separates the nations as a shepherd separates sheep from goats. The King identifies Himself with "the least of these brothers of Mine," so that mercy shown to the hungry, thirsty, stranger, naked, sick and imprisoned is received as mercy shown to Him.
