Matthew 27:49 meaning and explanation

But the others said, “Leave Him alone. Let us see if Elijah comes to save Him.”

Matthew 27:49, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

These bystanders stand near the cross, having just heard Jesus cry out, "Eli, Eli," which they mistook for a call to Elijah (verses 46 to 47). Elijah was expected to return before the great day of the Lord (Malachi 4:5), so their words are mockery dressed as waiting: let us see whether the prophet comes to rescue him.
